Magnesium Deficiency – The Cause of ALL of Your Health Problems

Want to get your post shared on Facebook?  One method is to promote a health related fear in your feed reader’s mind, then propose a simple solution backed by scientific sounding rhetoric.  This way the apathetic reader need not even research.  The answer is right there!  It seems to be a trend among health related Facebook postings and the “Herbs, Cures, and Natural Remedies” page is right on track.   It’s all about getting hits hits hits.

99% of the world is Magnesium deficient?  What?  No one told us!  How do we fix it?  Oh here…..

In the linked article, Dr. Mark Sircus, Ac., OMD, DM (P) (acupuncturist, doctor of oriental and pastoral medicine, etc) has posted a laundry list of symptoms related to magnesium deficiency. According to Dr. Sircus, the symptoms of magnesium deficiency are below.  Notice that most symptoms are things that everyone could identify with at one time or another.  This makes the list pretty useless in making any sort of determination of deficiency.  However, it does an excellent job of drumming up fear in the minds of uncritical readers.

  • Physical and mental fatigue
  • Persistent under-eye twitch
  • Tension in the upper back, shoulders and neck
  • Headaches
  • Pre-menstrual fluid retention and/or breast tenderness
  • Low energy
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Nervousness
  • Anxiousness
  • Irritability
  • Seizures (and tantrums)
  • Poor digestion
  • PMS and hormonal imbalances
  • Inability to sleep
  • Muscle tension, spasm and cramps
  • Calcification of organs
  • Weakening of the bones
  • Abnormal heart rhythm

His post failed to provide any scientific evidence to back up a plethora of amazing claims.  In one part of his article, he mocks doctors due to “their almost total ignorance of magnesium, doctors end up hurting more than they help, for many of the medical interventions drive down magnesium levels when they should be driving them up.”   Most of his rhetoric revolves around a notion that doctors are dumb and “big pharma” is conspiring to keep his simple solutions to perfect health quiet.  He also suggests fighting cancer with PH strips, baking soda and a myriad of other non science based claims. I don’t feel obligated to disprove every claim of his because he makes claims without sourcing.

That’s not all, Sircus warns that lack of magnesium causes autism.  In the current climate of perceived epidemics, autism is the latest ‘scare word’.  Mr. Sircus plays it up well.  Fret not concerned parents, on all of his posts, he places a link to his e-book on magnesium deficiency.  His post was also shared on Facebook with a link to an herbal store selling Magnesium supplements.  (I hope all the parents of autistic children are relieved now that they have this simple solution……F*** you Sircus)

Magnesium Deficiency Is Real

There is such thing as magnesium deficiency and doctors are well aware of it.  It’s usually related to certain health conditions, alcoholism or the use of certain medications.  However, fear-mongering posts stating that 99% of the world is deficient and a ton of general symptoms are unnecessary.

Symptomatic magnesium deficiency due to low dietary intake in otherwise-healthy people is uncommon because the kidneys limit urinary excretion of this mineral. However, habitually low intakes or excessive losses of magnesium due to certain health conditions, chronic alcoholism, and/or the use of certain medications can lead to magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium deficiency can also be caused by hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, pancreatitis, parathyroid disorders, chronic diarrhea.  Basically….if you’re eating a healthy diet and don’t suffer from a condition above, you don’t need worry.  You definitely don’t need to buy supplements from Dr. Sircus.

Doctor Sircus Is Not Real

Besides the fact that he has little or no evidence to support his claims, Dr. Sircus is not a doctor.  He’s an acupuncturist and “doctor of oriental pastoral medicine”.  Yet, he’s happy to share his deep knowledge of human biology, neurology, nutrition, endocrinology and oncology.  You can get a one month $1200 cancer consultation that includes “four of Dr. Sircus’s e-books and is recommended for people, families and children who need in-depth support with doing the full Natural Allopathic Protocol”.

If you’re a stage 3 Cancer patient, he suggests “Program 2” the $2400 package.

Feel free to read all about Dr. Sircus.  Google his name and his sites will pop right up.  I don’t want any more link juice from Survival Gardener heading his way.

I know we all want easy answers, but folks, can we please stop sharing this garbage?
